Double Knee Replacement: A Geezah Adventure

In the summer of 2025, I had double knee replacement surgery because it’s what Geezahs do. Parts worn out? You buy new ones, right? If the other option is to quit doing the things that bring you joy, the decision is simple. You send it. But a simple decision does not equate to an easy one.

Throughout the process, I felt confused, under-informed, and mostly scared. I Googled, type-talked with the always over-encouraging ChatGPT, and spoke with many people who’d undertaken the journey. Even so, even with CHAT GPT pumping my tires (who doesn’t love to be lauded, even by an LLM?), the information I found was contradictory and made me even more unsure about the undertaking.

If you are in a similar situation, it might be helpful to hear how it went for one not especially courageous, not-rich, grind-it-out, sixty-three-year-old working stiff. I claim no authority here—I’m not a doctor, psychologist, or physical therapist—but I did make it through it and have written about it as truthfully and bluntly as possible.

Our story starts a bit earlier than my summer of Knee Installation because, as you’ll see, the build-up was as challenging as the Bone Sawing Thursday(s), and the many grueling days after I became a person who’d set off TSA metal detectors.
